foodwatch analysis of the REFIT proposal for reforming EU General Food Law: more far-reaching changes needed

Whether it is fipronil in eggs, contaminated Lactalis baby milk in 86 countries or horsemeat in beef lasagne: food scandals are recurring in Europe – and EU law fails to effectively protect consumers from fraud and unsafe food. This is due to numerous loopholes and a serious lack of enforcement of EU law. The European Commission has now presented a proposal to reform the General Food Law of the European Union (“REFIT” process of EC Regulation No. 178/2002). In the opinion of foodwatch, this proposal is completely inadequate. Instead, EU food law needs to be fundamentally revised.

We will outline which changes are needed in EU food law with concrete examples from the various foodwatch offices at a Press Breakfast in Brussels, to which you are cordially invited:
