„In the UK, 49 companies have implemented traffic light colour coding to FOP labelling, together with 3 supermarket chains in the EU. Many of these companies report that their consumers are using the traffic light FOP labelling to make healthier choices when doing their shopping. One major UK retailer in the UK compared sales of particular products over 12 week periods before and after traffic light colour coded FOP labels were introduced and found that overall there was a 15% increase in sales of healthier products and a 12% decrease in sales of less healthy products. Another retailer reviewed sales data over a 12 month period after the introduction of traffic light signposting and found a significant increase in sales for 'healthy' choices (more greens) in sandwich and ready meal categories as well as a decrease in sales for 'less healthy' choices (more reds) in sandwich and ready meal categories. [...]UK businesses are using the nutritional criteria for traffic light colour coding as a tool to plan and drive their product reformulation and development activities. For example, the manufacturers McCain and Bernard Matthews have reported using the criteria to develop healthier products such as chips and coated turkey based products with lower levels of salt and saturated fat.“
